What is Inkscape?
Inkscape is a FREE software that allows you to create designs for all of your Cricut projects.
With Inkscape, you can save your designs as SVG files, PNG, DXG, PDF, and other file types. This is important because you can save SVG files to your computer or laptop and share them with other people.
You can’t do that with designs you make in Design Space; those designs are “stuck” in Design Space.
Inkscape can be downloaded and installed on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.

What are SVG files?
SVG files are scalable vector graphics that are high-quality and can be used to make a variety of Cricut projects including sweatshirts, cake toppers, and more.
SVG files are the preferred file type to use with Cricut Design Space because you’re able to still edit the designs once you bring them into Cricut Design Space.
What is the difference between Inkscape and SVG?
As mentioned above, Inkscape is a graphic design software that allows you to make SVG files.
SVG files are scalable vector graphics that are super high-quality and you can use these SVG files to make Cricut projects including shirts, wood signs, greeting cards, tote bags, and more.
Can you create SVG files in Cricut Design Space? Can Cricut Design Space create SVG files?
No, you cannot create SVG files in Cricut Design Space to be shared with others. Any designs that you create in Cricut Design Space are “stuck” in the software and can’t be shared with others.
In Cricut Design Space, you can create designs, but your options are very limited if you don’t subscribe to Cricut Access and if you don’t upload SVG files to Design Space.
Currently, when you create designs in Cricut Design Space, you can save your projects, but you can’t export SVG files from Cricut Design Space.

How to export from Inkscape to Cricut Design Space?
To export from Inkscape to Cricut, you first need to decide which type of SVG file to export.
There are 4 types of SVG files you can export in Inkscape which include:
- .svg (Optimized SVG)
- .svg (Inkscape SVG) – keeps all of the data in your file, even data that’s only useful for editing with Inkscape, and no other editor
- .svg (Plain SVG) – for sharing your designs with other people, who might not use Inkscape
- .svgz (compressed Inkscape/Plain SVG) – compressed to save space on your hard drive
From my experience, you can save your SVG file as any of the file types above and upload it to Cricut Design Space and not have any issues. I typically save my files as .svg (Inkscape SVG), which is the default.
