Reverse canvases are pretty popular right now. DIY reverse canvases can add that farmhouse chic look to any home. In this really simple diy tutorial I’ll show you how to create a diy reverse canvas with acrylic paint.

Supplies you’ll need:

Step 1: Separate your canvas

Using your pliers, pull the staples out the back of the canvas. If your pliers aren’t getting the job done, find some other pointed tool to safely remove the staples.

Once your canvas is separated from the wood frame, sit the canvas to the side.

Step 2: Paint or stain your frame

My Vinyl Direct

Paint your wood frame with your favorite color acrylic paint or you can also stain your frame with wood stain. If you are using acrylic paint, allow the frame to sit for at least 2 hours before beginning to assemble. If you are using wood stain I recommend at least 24 hours for your frame to dry completely.

Step 3: Cut your heat transfer vinyl

Open Cricut Design Space and upload the free svg file that I used for this diy reverse canvas. Resize your design to fit within your frame being sure to leave a few inches of extra space around your design.

Mirror your design and then cut your htv with your Cricut machine.

Using your Cricut EasyPress machine adhere the htv to the canvas. I recommend using a temperature setting of 280 degrees for 5-10 seconds. Don’t forget to center your design on the canvas.

Step 5: Assemble your canvas

Lay your frame on top of your canvas and use a pencil to trace the frame onto the canvas. Be sure that your design is centered on the canvas and then trace the frame.

Use your scissors to cut away the excess canvas.

Using your glue gun, adhere the canvas to the back of your frame. You can also use a staple gun to staple your canvas to your frame.

And just like that you are all done!!
